Purpose of Education
In our ever-changing, complex world, the children of today need to develop the knowledge, skills and strength of character to empower them to create their own bright future.
Knaphill School Curriculum Principles
- Strengthening social justice through the acquisition of powerful knowledge
- Developing character and values for life
Strengthening social justice through the acquisition of powerful knowledge – We provide every child with the powerful knowledge they need to build a strong foundation for learning. Reading is given high priority as this enables access to the full curriculum.
Our curriculum has key concepts that flow through it which children acquire, keep coming back to and develop over time, to make that learning ’stick’. Our selected subject content is relevant to their current lives and should support children to develop their knowledge of complex issues, giving them an informed voice in an ever-changing world. Our curriculum empowers children to live the values and be the voice of a better future for our community, our nation, and our world.
Developing character and values for life – We aim to create a culture of aspiration, building the confidence and resilience of our children so that they recognise achievements and cultivate a sense of pride in themselves and others, so that any challenges ahead of them can be faced with a growth
mind-set and determination to succeed. The entire curriculum is purposefully planned to bring opportunities to enhance children’s understanding of values, giving time to reflect on thoughts, emotions, feelings, and regulate them; which helps to sustain mental health and increases the capacity to build and maintain happy, healthy relationships and self-determination.
Our curriculum Aims or Drivers, bring our purpose of education to life.
These aims act as drivers for change and provide focus when difficult decisions have to be made about choices within the curriculum.
Living our Values – our values guide our thinking and behaviour, they help us to understand ourselves and our community and bring us closer together, enabling us to flourish. Knowledge of our communities acquired in history, geography, R.E and PSHE lessons build mutual respect.
Community – developing happy communities is at the heart of everything we do. We deepen children’s knowledge to enable them to form great relationships with people of all backgrounds and to foster a true sense of belonging.
Innovation – innovation and technology are key and we ensure every child has the opportunity to learn creatively, enabling them to become innovators of the future.
