HISTORY

Key Stage 2

Knaphill’s history curriculum aims to inspire children to be curious and creative thinkers who develop a comprehensive knowledge of local, and national history and the wider world. We want children to develop the confidence to think critically, ask questions, and be able to analyse and explain historical evidence. We aim to develop children’s understanding of how historians study the past, construct accounts and equip them with the skills needed to carry out their own historical enquiries.

Through our curriculum we aim to build an awareness of significant events and people in global, British and local history and recognise how things have changed over time. Our history lessons will support children in understanding the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups. Studying history allows children to appreciate the many reasons why people may behave in the way they do, supporting children to develop empathy for others whilst providing them with the opportunity to learn from mankind’s past mistakes.

Knaphill’s history curriculum supports children in building their understanding of chronology each year, allowing them to make connections over periods of time and develop a chronologically-secure knowledge of history.

Our Vision for History at Knaphill School

Learning about the past has the ability to enrich and empower the lives of children. At Knaphill School, our history curriculum will be filled with new and interesting learning experiences that will stay with children for a lifetime.

Our vision for history at Knaphill School is based on children developing an excellent historical knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Through well-taught and well-sequenced lessons, children will be encouraged to be curious about the past whilst developing their historical investigation skills. History lessons will promote critical thinking and allow pupils to ask questions, weigh up evidence and develop their own perspective and judgements. This enables pupils to understand the lives of others, the process of change and the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups. We see history as playing a crucial role in children’s personal development as they investigate and learn from the mistakes, struggles and achievements of those from the past.

To create a strong and coherent history curriculum we make meaningful links to other areas of the curriculum, including Geography, Art, DT, English and Science. History at Knaphill School is designed to consider diversity, promote social justice and inspire all children to have aspirations for their own future. Our curriculum offer is enriched by trips and visits, links with local history, and an application to real-life contexts, which encourages children to consider how they can create their own change for the future.
