PSHE

Key Stage 2

Our Vision for PSHE at Knaphill School

What we teach in the classroom will help our children foster lifelong aspirations, goals and values. With this in mind, Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) isn’t just another school subject. It’s a chance to give every child at Knaphill Junior School an equal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future.

This includes helping them learn how to manage critical issues they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change, and giving them a solid foundation for whatever challenging opportunities lie ahead, so they can face a world full of uncertainty with hope.

From making informed decisions about their bodies to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps our children prepare for all the opportunities, challenges, life decisions and responsibilities they’ll face.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) is taught within Years 1-6 focusing on three topics: Relationships, Living in a Wider World and Health and Well-being. Each year builds on the previous years’ learning to ensure our children have a solid understanding of each topic we cover.

RSE

We teach Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) within our PSHE lessons. In line with the Department of Education’s statutory guidance about the RSE curriculum, Knaphill Federation of Schools have reviewed our Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) curriculum to ensure that all compulsory RSE content is covered.

Please note that at Primary School age, sex education is not statutory for children and parents can withdraw their children from these sessions (please see our RSE Policy for more information about how to do this).

Intent:

The intended impact of our PSHE teaching is to enable pupils to develop their emotional literacy and social skills, being aware of their own thoughts and feelings as they happen and developing strategies to help manage them. We aim to ensure that children leave Year 6 with the skills required to successfully live in today’s world and their next phase of education.

Implementation:

The PSHE scheme of work followed is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme at the same time. We use the SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship) Scheme of work which has been created by CORAM Life Education. We have organised our PSHE curriculum into 3 units across the year.

Autumn Term- Relationships

Spring Term- Living in the Wider World

Summer Term- Health and Wellbeing

Long term planning is overseen by the subject coordinator and, in each year group, one teacher is responsible for planning of the PSHE lessons.

Children use self-assessment at the start of a topic using a checklist and at the end of a unit, the children apply their understanding for assessment e.g. answering an agony Aunt style questions. Much of the lesson is discussion or practical activity based and works towards developing skills which can be observed in practice throughout the school day.

Impact:

Our PSHE curriculum is designed to enable skills to be acquired throughout the course of the year and be built upon as each year progresses. Each unit focuses on different key skills to be acquired by the end of the year, some examples are:

Relationships- Developing and maintaining healthy and positive relationships, understanding bullying, how to ask for help and resolving conflicts.

Living in the Wider World- Managing money, understanding community, rights and responsibilities, first aid and calling emergency services.

Health and Wellbeing- Sun safety, puberty and changes to the body, how the media can influence us and dental hygiene.
